Man Sentenced To Three Months Imprisonment For Goat & Ram Theft

35-year-old man identified as Kabiru Lawal has been sentenced to three months imprisonment by an Abeokuta Chief Magistrates’ Court for the theft of eight goats and one ram, collectively valued at ₦300,000.

Lawal, a resident of Olomore area in Abeokuta, pleaded guilty to charges of stealing and conversion brought against him. The sentencing was delivered by Magistrate V.B. William, who pronounced Lawal guilty following his plea.

According to the court proceedings, Lawal was sentenced to three months imprisonment for each of the two counts, with the terms to run concurrently. However, Magistrate William offered him an option to restitute the ₦300,000 to the complainant, Ibrahim Akanbi.

The prosecution, presented by Inspector Lawrence Olu-Balogun, detailed that the offences were committed in June 2023 at No. 47, Kuforiji Olubi Drive, Abeokuta. Lawal allegedly obtained the eight goats and one ram from Ibrahim Akanbi under the guise of selling them on his behalf.

“Instead of selling the livestock and remitting the proceeds to the complainant, Lawal sold them off and kept the money for personal use. He subsequently fled Ogun State but was apprehended later,”
Inspector Olu-Balogun stated.

The charges against Lawal were based on the provisions of Section 419(b) and 390(3) of the Criminal Code Laws of Ogun State, 2006, which deal with fraudulently obtaining property and stealing respectively.

The sentencing marks another step in the judicial system’s effort to curb theft and fraud within the state, reaffirming consequences for criminal activities.
