The tragedy struck during the weekend in Odigbo Local Government Area of Ondo State following the killing of an 80-year-old grandmother.
The body of the octogenarian was found inside her farm in the Costain axis of the local government following suspicion that she had been r*ped before her assailants murdered her.
Before her body was discovered, the deceased had been declared missing since last Wednesday, when she failed to return home after leaving her farm.
Sources within the agrarian community argued that the victim was r*ped to death, particularly in the position in which her corpse was discovered.
One of the sources hinted that there had been cases of r*pe in the community in recent times, a situation she said had prevented most of the women in the community from going to the farm alone.
The source added that a suspect, Sunday, who is a popular palm wine tapper within the community, had been arrested by some youths after the mobile phone of the deceased elderly woman was found on him.
The suspect was said to have revealed during interrogation that the victim was allegedly attacked and killed by suspected herders.
However, the suspect has been handed over to the police at Costain for investigation.
When contacted, the police spokesperson in the state, Funmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, stated that she would get back for details but has not reverted as of press time.
