The Acting Rector of the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology (NCAT), Zaria, Shaka Imalighwe, has disclosed that the institution currently lacks a single helicopter for training purposes.

Imalighwe made this revelation during an investigative hearing organized by the House of Representatives to probe the sale of two helicopters belonging to the College.
Addressing the House of Representatives Committee on Public Assets, Imalighwe explained that he assumed the role of Acting Rector in January 2024 and was not involved in the management team responsible for facilitating the sale of the helicopters, despite serving as Deputy Rector at the time of the sale.
Expressing concern over the sale of the helicopters to private individuals, Committee Chairman Ademorin Kuye highlighted the alarming consequence of the College being left without helicopters for training purposes.
The committee further scrutinized the sale process, particularly in light of interest expressed by various security agencies, including the Nigerian Air Force, Navy, and Police, to purchase the helicopters. Despite indications of interest conveyed both in writing and through on-site visits, the College reportedly denied these agencies the opportunity to acquire the helicopters.
In response to the revelations, the committee has summoned the immediate past and current ministers of Aviation, as well as representatives from the Ministry of Works, Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOFI), and the former and current rectors of the College, among others, to appear before the committee during its next investigative session.
The investigation underscores the critical importance of transparency and accountability in the management of public assets, particularly within institutions vital to national security and professional training. As the probe unfolds, stakeholders are eager to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the sale of the helicopters and to ensure appropriate measures are taken to address any lapses in governance and asset management within the NCAT.
