In a recent update, the United Kingdom’s Home Office has enforced new measures restricting Nigerian students and other overseas students from bringing dependants through the study visa route.
The policy, effective immediately, allows exceptions only for postgraduate research or government-sponsored scholarship students.
The decision, aimed at reducing overall migration, follows a law implemented in May 2023, specifically targeting Nigerian students studying in the UK.
Thus, the UK government seeks to curtail immigration, which currently stands at around one million.
Under the revised regulations, international students will no longer have the option to switch from the student route to work routes before completing their studies, preventing misuse of the visa system.
Additionally, a review of maintenance requirements for students and dependents will be conducted, along with measures to curb ‘unscrupulous’ education agents exploiting immigration applications.
The Home Office’s official statement on X (formerly Twitter), emphasized that the new restrictions on student visa routes will significantly reduce net migration.
“We are fully committed to seeing a decisive cut in migration. From today, new overseas students will no longer be able to bring family members to the UK. Postgraduate research or government-funded scholarships students will be exempt,” the statement read.
Moreover, the ban on using a student visa as a backdoor route to work in the UK is part of the government’s broader strategy.
Recent statistics reveal a surge in student visas, with nearly half a million issued in the last year.
Dependents of overseas students have also seen a substantial increase of 750% since 2019, reaching 136,000 individuals thus, the Home Office has assured the public that these changes align with the government’s commitment to lowering overall migration and ensuring that migration to the UK remains highly skilled and beneficial.
In conclusion, the UK’s Home Office affirmed that these measures aim to fulfill international education strategy commitments, while contributing to the government’s goal of maintaining sustainable levels of net migration. The terms of the graduate route, however, remain unchanged.
