Nigerian government shuts Chinese supermarket over discrimination in Abuja

The Federal Competition and Consumer and Protection Commission (FCCPC) has sealed up an Abuja-based Chinese supermarket located at the China General Chamber of Commerce.

The FCCPC officials shut the supermarket when they stormed the premises on Monday.

The commission’s officials sealed the place after interrogating Nigerian workers at the supermarket.

The workers — mostly Nigerians — stated this on Monday when the officials of the Federal Competition and Consumer and Protection Commission (FCCPC) stormed the supermarket.

The workers said that the owner of the supermarket, a Chinese lady, Cindy Liu Bei, fled on Monday morning at 8:26am with her family as confirmed on the Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) camera.

Recall that Nigerians on Sunday had expressed outrage over a discriminatory policy implemented by the Chinese supermarket which restricted entry exclusively to its citizens and barred Nigerians.

The facility manager of the complex Shaibu Sanusi confirmed that Nigerians from outside the complex do not shop but Nigerians within can access it.

While the supermarket remains shut, the consumer protection agency seems to believe that some people are hiding inside in a bid to avoid confrontation with the agency.

Meanwhile, the Chinese Embassy in Abuja has expressed doubts over the veracity of the reports of discrimination being meted out against Nigerians at a Chinese Supermarket located in Abuja, the nation’s capital, following the outrage that trailed the reports.

A source in the embassy who does not want his name in print told The Leadership Monday that the of discrimination sounded mischievous because Nigeria and China have very fruitful diplomatic relations.

He added that Nigerians have travelled to China for businesses and other important engagements without discrimination.

The story appears to be untrue because Nigerians have visited China several times and have an experience that the Chinese people are friendly and warm. They don’t discriminate against other people.,” he said.
